Premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Dear Lara is already positioning itself as one of the most urgent and emotionally devastating documentaries of the year. Directed by world-renowned Canadian violinist Lara St John, the powerful social justice film made its debut, followed by a post-screening panel Q&A featuring St John and several of the film’s courageous subjects.

SBIFF 2026: Violinist Lara St. John’s Documentary ‘Dear Lara’ is Powerful and Raw

In the 2015 film “Spotlight,” Editor Marty Baron, played by Liev Schreiber, instructs his journalists to show that child sexual abuse by priests was part of a larger system. “Show me this was systemic,” he says, “that it came from the top down.”

“Music was my voice even before I spoke. With Dear Lara, I’m now using that voice to help others reclaim theirs.”
